Course Title: IV Skills Certification Course

Accreditation or Continuing Education (CE) Information:

Successful completion criteria entail attending all module videos within the course material and achieving a score of 85% or higher on the post-test. Completion of this activity in its entirety will result in the awarding of 2.00 nursing contact hours. Nursing contact hours will be awarded for completion of this activity until September 30, 2025.

Course Description and Credentials:

The IV Skills Certification Course is an individual educational activity organized by Stephanee Beggs, BSN, RN and Myles Mungcal, BSN, RN. The purpose of this activity is to provide participants with valuable knowledge and skills regarding IV preparation, placement, complications, and safety using demonstration, experience, and evidence-based practice. To ensure transparency and maintain the highest educational standards, we are disclosing any relevant financial and non-financial relationships and affiliations of the presenter(s)/facilitator(s).

This nursing continuing professional development activity was approved by the Virginia Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Centerā€™s Commission on Accreditation.

Learning Objectives:

Stephanee and Myles developed a plan to assess the learning outcomes that represent the knowledge, skills and critical thinking expected of a nurse when preparing for IV insertion and management. In this course, one or more learning outcomes will be assessed through a mandatory post-test to evaluate the nursing students and/or graduate nurses' knowledge gained.Ā 

  1. Identify the Anatomy and Physiology of Peripheral Veins: Participants will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of peripheral veins, including vein selection and factors influencing vascular access.
  2. Perform Aseptic Techniques for IV Insertion: Participants will learn and apply proper aseptic techniques during IV insertion, reducing the risk of infection and complications.
  3. Manage IV Complications: Participants will be able to recognize and manage common IV complications, such as infiltration, phlebitis, and catheter dislodgment, to ensure patient safety and comfort.
  4. Ensure Patient Comfort and Safety: Participants will understand the importance of patient comfort and safety during IV procedures and demonstrate effective communication skills to address patient concerns.
  5. Adhere to Infection Control Guidelines: Participants will adhere to infection control guidelines and standard precautions during IV procedures, minimizing the risk of healthcare-associated infections.
  6. Recognize Emergency Situations: Participants will be able to identify potential IV-related emergencies, such as anaphylaxis or extravasation, and respond appropriately with timely interventions.
  7. Proficiency in IV Catheter Insertion Across Diverse Patient Populations: Participants will be able to perform IV catheter insertions effectively and confidently on diverse patient populations, including adults, pediatric patients, and geriatric patients.
  8. Organizing Tools and Equipment for Success: Participants will demonstrate the ability to effectively prepare for IV catheter insertion, including gathering and organizing the necessary tools and equipment required for a successful procedure.
  9. Continuously Improve IV Skills: Participants will develop a commitment to continuous professional development and seek opportunities to enhance their IV skills through ongoing education and practice.

Target Audience:

The target audience includes registered nurses and nursing students at any point in their careers. We recognize that more facets of the interdisciplinary team are also responsible for IV placement, which may extend to physicians, PAs/NPs, phlebotomists, EMTs, etc.Ā 

Educational Format and Materials:

The educational activity is an online course accessible through a dedicated learning platform (www.rnexplained.com). It comprises a series of interactive modules, which include video lectures and demonstrations. Participants can access the course at their convenience and progress through the content at their own pace. The online format allows for flexibility and engagement, enabling learners to interact with the course materials and track their progress throughout the duration of the program.

There are no relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies for those with the ability to control the content of this activity.

Privacy and Data Collection:

Participant data will be collected, stored, and used, ensuring compliance with relevant privacy laws and regulations. The course is required to maintain secure and confidential records of this activity for a minimum of six years from the date of delivery. This includes evaluation summation and a record/roster of all participants with the amount of contact hours awarded to each participant.
